Tooth cavities are the most common disease
affecting human population. If diagnosed in time the treatment of teeth
cavities is simple- Dental filling.
The procedure involved too is simple and
painless. It merely involves removal of the decayed tooth structure either
manually by excavators or by the use of special drills. Usually a combination
of two is used. Once the decayed structure is completely removed, the tooth is
then restored by dental filling. In certain cases where patient feels
sensitivity, tooth filling procedure can be performed under local anesthesia
too.
There are also different filling materials
depending on the intended purpose. Previously silver fillings used to be
popular. However due to the presence of mercury in silver fillings they have
now be discontinued.
Today the material of choice is dental
composite. These materials are available in various shades to exactly match the
tooth color.
Besides they are bonded to the tooth by the
use of special adhesive which makes it possible to use them in certain areas of
tooth where other restorative materials cannot be used.
Moreover these fillings are immediate
setting- so there are no eating or drinking precautions. Moreover this also
facilitates doing multiple fillings in the same appointment.
Checking and adjusting the bite is mandatory
after filling procedure to prevent the tooth from becoming painful. In some
cases some sensitivity is experienced for 2-3 days.
