Dentures are removable appliances used to replace missing
teeth A denture can be used to replace single, multiple to all teeth in the
jaw. Although dentures is a part of age old dentistry and has now largely replaced
by fixed bridges and implants, there remains a segment of population who are
still comfortable with their dentures.
There are certain cases where anterior teeth need to be
taken out and immediate replacement by either implants or bridges is either not
possible or not the treatment modality accepted by the patient, in such cases
there is an option for an immediate denture. The planning starts before the
actual extraction procedure. An impression of the involved area is taken and a
dental model is made. On the model the teeth need to be extracted are broken
and an immediate denture made on the same model. So even before the actual
extraction has taken place, the denture is ready.
Even in dentures there are a number of different type
available- simple acrylic denture, metal denture and flexible denture. Today
for a single to multiple teeth replacement (but not all) the flexible denture
has become quite popular. This is because the denture is elastic, light weight
and does not break even if it falls on the ground.
