With the advances in dental
technology, more and more people are now taking advantage of the recent
advances to find a solution to the missing tooth problem. At a time removable
dentures were the only solution. Most of the patients found difficulty in
chewing with dentures. Besides dentures require cleaning after every meal which
some patients found embarrassing too. Next development was the introduction of
fixed crowns and bridges, which was an instant hit.
Patients found it very comfortable
to adapt to these fixed teeth. Cosmetically also, the teeth looked good.
However, crowns and bridges had a major limitation. They require the presence
of healthy teeth which serve as support and these teeth need to be shaped up in
preparation of crowns and bridges. In case of single missing tooth, two
adjacent teeth need to be grinded, which makes the treatment very invasive
This short coming was provided a
solution by the introduction of the dental implants to dentistry. Dental
Implants are small titanium screws which provide a substitute for the missing
root of the tooth. They can be used to replace single tooth, multiple tooth or
even all teeth in the jaw. The tooth provided over these implant is independent
requiring no support from adjacent teeth. Although this treatment option is
slightly expensive, it is the most conservative and gold standard for single
tooth replacement. However, the placement of dental implants require the presence
of a certain quantity of bone in terms of width and height.
