Know All About Basal Dental Implants

Basal Implants are the new entrant in the field of dental implantology. They differ from conventional implants in design, the manner of placement and loading pattern. These are single piece polished surface implants placed obliquely in bone in a manner that the implant gets mechanically locked in the bone. And a major important difference is that they are indicated for immediate loading irrespective of the position of the implant in the mouth.

This concept of immediate placement and immediate loading is the reason why basal implants are gaining popularity. Basal implant cases are usually full mouth implant cases. However, they can be used to replace even 2 to 3 missing teeth but never a single tooth. Another reason for the popularity of basal implants is that they can be successfully placed in diabetics and smokers too. Also, these implants do not need expensive bone grafting or sinus lift procedures as these implants can be placed in minimal amounts of bone in which conventional dental implant placement is not possible. The reason behind this is that these implants derive anchorage from basal bone which is highly mineralized and resistant to resorption even in advanced cases of bone loss. Being a single piece these implants are also resistant to the problem of abutment screw loosening which is seen in conventional implants.

The concept of basal implants has been taken from the screws used in orthopedic surgery. These implants have a loading protocol of 72 hours. Both upper and lower arch implants can be placed in a day.

However, these implants have some drawbacks too. Since these are immediately loaded, the gums are in a state of inflammation so the finishing at the gum margin is not good leading to food accumulation later on.
