The percentage of kids presenting as patients in dental practice is rapidly increasing. This the change from coarse fibrous diet to a refined sugary diet is the main culprit. This sugary diet sticks to the teeth is difficult to clean and lacks functional stimulation which is needed for jaw growth. On the contrary, rough fruits and vegetables have a flushing effect on teeth.
The oral hygiene of a child should begin as soon as first baby teeth are visible in the mouth. At this stage, a finger held silicone toothbrush is idle for cleaning the teeth. As more teeth erupt, the child should be taught brushing using a baby brush and a fluoride rich toothpaste. A motorized brush can also be used but under parental supervision. Brushing should be projected as an interesting act rather than a boring routine. Twice a day brushing is ideal. Also making the sleep with a milk bottle in the mouth should be particularly avoided.
A child should be placed on a recall check up with a dentist every 6 months even if there is no problem. Regular checkups help to diagnose early developing cavities or problems with tooth eruption schedule and initiate preventive steps.
Kids are very special dental patients. They need special care and attention and particularly faith in the treating dentist. Regular checkups also familiarize a child with a dental clinic environment so that treating a child becomes easy should a dental problem actually arise.
Taking dental care of kids is more about educating parents on the matter. We at Dr. Garg’s Multispeciality Dental Center take special care in treating our kids' patients.
