Dental caries or cavity is quite a common occurrence. The primary cause of dental cavities is primarily consumption of sweet and sticky food coupled with improper oral hygiene. The food rots in the mouth producing an acid that dissolves the tooth enamel causing cavities. In the initial stages dental cavities may be painless or cause minor sensitivity and are often ignored. As the decay spreads, tooth gets progressively sensitive to cold. The last stage is when the decay reaches the vital portion of the tooth called the pulp. This stage is associated with severe pain.
Dental cavities are usually painless and hence does not gather attention of the patient in initial stages. They are usually diagnosed during routine check ups. At this stage the treatment is also very simple. The decayed portion is simply removed and the tooth repaired with a filling material. There are choices in the type of filling material too. Silver fillings have now been replaced by the cosmetic fillings due to their aesthetic appearance and toxic effects of mercury used in silver filling. Fillings used in children are rich in fluorides due to their anti-cavity effect.
But the best practise for dental cavities is prevention.
