The color of my teeth is not perfect white….what do I do?

This is a very common question that my patients ask me on almost a daily basis. Actually it is not exactly the fault of the patient. Ever since we were kids, we have been taught that the color of the teeth is white!

However, the fact is that the color of the teeth is never perfect white. It is a combination of white and yellow in varying proportions. If we examine the structure of a toothy, the outer layer of a tooth is called enamel and the layer below the enamel is called Dentin. This layer is slightly yellowish in color. The enamel is glass like and it reflects the color of the dentin. The thickness of enamel determines the color of a tooth. Those who have a thick layer of enamel, the reflection of dentin color is less and as a result, the teeth will appear whitish (not perfect white). Even in the same person, different teeth might have difference in color due to the same reason. Even in the same tooth, the color might vary.

Aging and tooth color

Also as we age the enamel wears down due to usage. As a result, the teeth start appearing slightly yellowish.

Teeth Whitening

If you are not happy with how your teeth appears and looking to have a whiter, brighter smile, Cosmetic Dentistry can be of help. Although, there are a number of teeth whitening products available as over the counter solutions, they will not help you achieve the desired results. Instead opting for a professional teeth whitening system will not only whiten your teeth but also help you keep away from side-effects.

Again it is important to note that the term ”teeth whitening” is actually a misnomer. It should actually be called teeth bleaching. The term whitening puts a false impression in the mind of the patient that the teeth will become pearly white after the treatment. Bleaching actually removes all extrinsic strains and to some extent intrinsic stains too and help bring out the natural tooth color.

Zoom Teeth Whitening

Of all, Zoom whitening system is considered the “gold standard” for teeth whitening. It can help you lighten your teeth by approx. 8 shades. The first procedure is an in –office procedure that takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Home cares products can be used as touch-ups.
