My Gums have a dark colored pigmentation…….what do I do?

Dark colored appearance of gums is caused due to the presence of a pigment called “melanin”. The same pigment is present in the skin too that gives it a dark appearance. It is not abnormal or pathologic to have dark gums. Infact, it is perfectly normal to have melanin pigment both in gums and skin.

If you are not happy with how your gums appear, this melanin pigment can be easily removed from the gums. The reasons for removal are purely cosmetic. The procedure is called depigmentation surgery and can be carried out by a blade or by using laser.

Gum Depigmentation using Laser

Laser technique is the preferred method for depigmentation as it is quick, bloodless, promotes faster healing and with hardly any post-operative complications. Results are evident post one week of healing with areas of melanin pigmentation being replaced by pink gums. The surgery is performed by highly skilled and experienced Laser dental specialists.

However, this removal is not permanent. The melanin is formed by special cells in the deeper layer of gums and keeps on migrating towards the superficial layers of the gums leading to a recurrence of the condition. However, it takes about 2 years for the recurrence and even then the recurrence might not be as severe as the original condition.

Dr Garg’s Multispeciality Dental Centre is a super-speciality dental clinic based in Rajouri Garden which specializes in such cosmetic dental surgeries. Equipped with State-of the art German Laser unit, our team of expert can help you achieve pigment free gums.
